Mapping Census Tract Demographics

.. using visual data analytics and developing business intelligence .. this section provides a 4-step procedure to develop thematic pattern and reference maps for census tracts. The focus of this section is on mapping Census 2010 census tracts using data from the 2014 American Community Survey (ACS2014). A similar set of steps could be followed for Census 2000 tracts with Census 2000 data or Census 2010 tracts with Census 2010 demographics or different vintage ACS data. Steps summarized here can be used with most any Windows-based computer having Internet access. See the related full Web section with more details.

Children’s Demographics by School District

.. data and tools to analyze children’s demographics by school district ..  the ACS 2014 median household income for the Houston ISD, TX (HISD) was $46,069 (all households) compared to $41,896 (grade relevant children’s households). How does economic prosperity (or choose from many other attributes) vary between the total population of an area and to those of total children or grade relevant children by type of enrollment in districts of interest? See related Web section with interactive table.

This section summarizes data and tools to access to the children’s demographic-economic data, based on the 2014 American Community Survey (ACS 2014) school district special tabulation (SDST), for each/all school districts. These data provide insights into the population, social, economic and housing characteristics of total children and grade relevant children — in contrast to the total population and housing. Use the interactive table below to view, rank, compare, query children’s characteristics.

Importance of these Data
The annually updated SDST data are a unique source of data to help stakeholders understand demographic-economic characteristics of total children as well as grade relevant children. The real power of these data is that they enable analysis of children’s living characteristics by type of enrollment (enrolled in public school, enrolled in private school, not enrolled) by school district. For example, in this Houston ISD, TX profile it can be determined that of those grade relevant children who ‘speak English less than “very well”.

– enrolled in private school
… 810 or 3.9% of total grade relevant children enrolled private (very low)
– not enrolled
… 3,265 or 30.9% of total grade relevant children not enrolled (very high)

How does Houston ISD compare to Dallas ISD? … to Los Angeles Unified? … use these data to find out. Whether ability to speak English, or other living/demographic environmental characteristics, these are among the factors that can primarily influence educational outcomes.

Comparing the Number of Households
The total number of households compared to the number of households with grade relevant children is often in the range of 3-to-4 to 1. The following table shows illustrative examples for selected districts.

Scope of the School District Special Tabulation
The School District Special Tabulation is a tabulation of the characteristics of children who reside within the boundaries of a school district. Note that such residents/children might attend a school located outside of the school district of residence. Subject matter items are tabulated for these seven universes:
• all children — population ages 0-19, 18 & 19 not high school graduates
• all school age, grade relevant children
– children enrolled
– children enrolled in public school
– children enrolled in private school
– relevant children not enrolled

Analyzing ACS 2014 1-Year Supplemental Data

.. examining 2014 characteristics of areas with population 20,000 and over  .. this section summarizes how to use the America Community Survey (ACS2014) “supplemental” data (ACS2014S) to access more current estimates than otherwise available. The America Community Survey “supplemental” data are just that, a supplemental set of ACS 2014 1-year estimates — for areas 20,000 population and over. See the related Web section providing more detail.

The importance of the ACS 2014S data are two fold.
1 – 2014 1-year estimates for a larger number of areas than available from the ACS 2014 1-year (ACS2014) estimates.
2 – more current (2014) data for those areas only available from the 5-year estimates (centric to 2012) that are between 20,000 and 65,000 population.

The ten cities/places with the highest 2014 median family income based on 1-year estimates were all under 65,000 population. These cities were not included in the ACS 2014 1-year standard estimates but were included in the ACS 2014 1-year supplemental estimates. See list below.

This section provides an overview of the ACS 2014 supplemental data and provides a summary of tools, interactive table and GIS project, to analyze characteristics of these areas. These data are used by ProximityOne to develop/update annual county demographic-economic projections. See schedule of related 2016 updates.

Scope of Expanded Geography Available
As shown in the table below, 2014 1-year “supplemental” estimates are available for more than twice as many counties from the ACS2014S compared to the ACS2014 “standard” 1-year estimates. However, there area a more limited set of subject matter data available from the ACS2014S data compared to both the ACS 2014 1-year and 5-year estimates.

America’s Million+ Population Cities: Chicago

.. there are 10 U.S. cities having population of 1 million or more … Chicago is ranked 3rd among all U.S. cities based on 2015 population.  The population of Chicago, IL changed from 2,695,605 in 2010 to 2,720,546 in 2015 (24,941 or 0.9%). The population of the U.S. overall changed from 308,758,105 in 2010 to 321,418,820 in 2015 (12,660,715 or 4.1%). Examine population characteristics and trends of the city of Chicago in context of other cities and counties using the interactive table.

Chicago is a principal city of the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL-IN-WI Metropolitan Statistical Area (CBSA 16980). This section reviews selected geographic, demographic and economic characteristics of the city of Chicago and tools to analyze these data.

America’s Million+ Population Cities

.. there are 10 million+ population cities in the U.S. .. each is reviewed in some detail in this section .. the change in U.S. city population from 2010 to 2015 ranged from growth of 357,979 in New York City to a decline of in Detroit, MI. New York City is actually five counties; the next largest city growth was Houston, TX with a 181,463 population gain. See cities with largest growth or decline using the interactive table.

The July 1, 2015 Census Bureau model-based estimates for the U.S. 19,505 incorporated cities show a total population of 202,066,769 compared to 192,179,239 as of Census 2010. These areas are incorporated cities as recognized by their corresponding state governments and granted certain governmental rights and responsibilities. ProximityOne integrates these estimates, with related data, in models to develop projections, examine change and assess the impact of change.

Using ACS County Data

… we are always seeking the most current data for areas of interest. This section provides an update on accessing unpublished ACS 1-year data for many counties.  Learn about how you can access ACS 1-year estimates for 85 counties for which Census released only as 5-year estimates … and why it matters. See the corresponding full Web section.

Data are tabulated from the Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) as 1-year estimates (for areas with population 65,000 and over) and as 5-year estimates (for areas under 65,000 population). See more about ACS 1-year versus 5-year estimates in this section.

ACS 2014 1-year tabulation areas, as released by the Census Bureau included 817 of 3142 counties and 508 of 917 metros/CBSAs. There are 85 counties for which ACS 2914 1-year estimates were not released by Census but are derivable by subtracting the aggregate county components from metro totals in selected metros.

The next view shows a zoom-in to the Austin, TX metro. The four green shaded counties had ACS 2014 1-year estimates tabulated and released. The fifth Austin metro county, Caldwell shaded blue, was not tabulated but the ACS 1-year data are derivable by subtracting the sum of the four counties from the metro totals. Tabulated data for Caldwell was released only as ACS 2014 5-year estimates. A similar situation exists in many metros across the country.

Why this Matters
There are 85 counties for which ACS 2014 1 year data are available but not released/made available by Census as separately tabulated areas. This is important due to these considerations:
• these are true annual estimates (as opposed to the other 5-year estimated counties)
• they are more recent that 5-year estimates
• they reflect conditions centric to one year
• they enable time series/trend analysis
• [as it turns out] they enable access to 1 year estimates for all counties (instead of some) in some metros

Census Tract-City Relationship Table

.. what census tracts are located in cities of interest? What are their codes? Conversely, do you have census tract codes and need to know corresponding city(s)? Get answers here.

This section provides access to an interactive table useful to examine relationships among Census 2010 census tracts, cities/places, and counties. Many cities and counties that might be experiencing demographic-economic decline will often have bright spots that are groups of a few or many census tracts. Census tracts are important sub-county geography in data analytics. See the related section on census data analytics. See more about census tracts and data analytics below in this section.

Relating Census Tracts to Cities & Counties
Census tracts are sub-county areas and nest coterminously within counties. The 6-character tract code is unique within county. For cities 10,000 and larger, there are some number of whole census tracts within the city. But around the perimeter of cities, census tracts will often be partly within and partly outside of the city. The following graphic shows the relationship of tracts, cities and counties in the Plano city area (green fill pattern) located mostly in Collin County within the Dallas metro. This map illustrates the geographic level of detail available using census tract demographics and the relative ease to gain insights using geospatial data analytics tools.

Using the Interactive Relationship Table
A small part of Plano is located in Denton county (see north-south bold red-brown boundary). Tract 021627 (see pointer) is located in Denton County and includes a part of Plano. To determine what geography tract 021627 intersects, click the Tract> button below the interactive table shown below. See that the tract is contained in parts of 4 cities.
